Did you know that Rochester has the lowest real estate prices out of all cities in the state? The median housing price is over 200,000 dollars less than the overall state average. Here are four interesting news updates out of Rochester this week, thanks to various local stations.

1. The Switch to Digital is Difficult

The Rochester NY Democrat and Chronicle reports that several downtown Rochester local theaters are struggling with the switch from film reels to digital projectors. Although digital projection has become normal for most theaters, small theaters have trouble covering the set up cost, which is about 60,000 dollars or more depending on the number of screens. In the coming year, though, film reels are expected to become even more difficult to obtain, with few studios releasing them anymore.

2. Kayak Death

A man died in Oatka Creek after his kayak flipped over in a narrow passage and became caught in a whirlpool. Several of his friends attempted to save him, but as Rochester News 10 reports, he was pulled underwater for many minutes before they were able to get to him, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

3. Lyme Disease

Health officials say that local cases of Lyme disease, which is usually spread by ticks, have been increasing. Wham 13 Rochester says that there are now several known cases of the disease and probably many more that have gone undocumented. Lyme disease has symptoms ranging from fever to long lasting neurological damage. If you do contract Lyme, it is important to get early diagnosis and treatment, as this is the best way to get a full recovery.

4. Bad News for Wegmans Employees?

Wegmans has announced that, starting in 2015, the renowned grocery chain will be cutting back on benefits for part time employees. Citing changes via the new health care law, the chain will stop offering health benefits to those working less than 30 hours a week. Channel 8 Rochester reports that the company employs about 14,000 people in the surrounding and downtown Rochester area.
